Philippines government issues warning against ‘leftist scams’

Philippines’ National Security Council (NSC) has warned the public about fundraising scams by leftist groups.

Leftist organizations Karapatan, Anakbayan, AKAP Ka, Pamalakaya and Oceana have conducted fundraising activities for the search for missing students Jhed Tamano and Jonila Castro, whom they allege were kidnapped by government forces.

NSC Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya issued the warning on Saturday after the Philippine National Police (PNP) reported that Tamano and Castro have escaped from the left-leaning organization where they belong, which allegedly has detained them.

Authorities have presented videos of the two students reconciling with their respective parents. The PNP said Tamano and Castro were now in a government safe house.

“They want the international community to believe that this country is a failed state,” he said.

Malaya said the NSC and PNP were building a case against the scammers with the help of the Department of Justice (DoJ).

“We will certainly look into their possible legal liabilities in relation to the Revised Penal Code, anti-cybercrime law and other special laws. We’re working now with the DoJ for the possible filing of charges against them,” Malaya added.
